Urinetown

October 28, 29 and November 3-5, 2011 at 7:30 pm
Matinee November 5, 1:30 pm

Edina Performing Arts Center

One of the most uproariously funny musicals in recent years, “Urinetown” is a hilarious tale of greed, corruption, love, and revolution in a time when water is worth its weight in gold. In a dark, futuristic metropolis, a terrible water shortage has led to a government-enforced ban on private toilets.  The citizenry must use public, pay-per-use amenities owned and operated by Urine Good Company, a malevolent corporation run by the corrupt Caldwell B. Cladwell.  The seriously silly show includes a romance, a revolution, and laughs.

Urinetown: The Musical  is a satirical comedy musical satirizing the legal system, capitalism, social irresponsibility, bureaucracy, and municipal politics.  The show parodies other musicals from Les Misérables to Kiss Me Kate and is praised for reinvigorating the very notion of what a musical could be.  Urinetown:  The Musical  catapults the “comedic romp” into the new millennium with its outrageous perspective, wickedly modern wit, and sustained ability to produce gales of unbridled laughter.  (Mark Hollman, music and lyrics; Greg Kotis, book and lyrics).

Edina Performing Arts Center

This moving American drama explores the friendship between a disturbed young man and his friendship with a disenchanted Kentucky preacher in rural southern Indiana in the 1930’s.   The play is a story of friendship, family, community, loss, and hope, told in a hauntingly poetic voice that speaks to the heart.  As playwright Jim Leonard Jr. puts it, “These are good and simple people, they have only the best of intentions.” Don’t miss this beautiful play!

Burial at Thebes January 26, 2012

Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL) Competition

Additional Performances:

If selected to move on to Region finals: Sat Feb 4th at EPAC

The play tells how Antigone, the daughter of Oedipus, gives her brother, the traitor Polyneices, a form of ritual burial (she scatters his corpse with dust) against the explicit instructions of her uncle, King Creon, and the advice of her sister, Ismene, even though she knows that the consequence will be her death. She thereby initiates a grimly tragic process: not only does Antigone die, hanging herself when Creon, in retribution, buries her alive in a cave, but Creon's son Haemon, who is betrothed to Antigone, also kills himself out of grief, as does Creon's wife, Eurydice. Creon, eventually convinced by the prophet Tiresias and the play's chorus of elders, does relent - too late - but Antigone is intransigent, despite a striking moment of self-doubt before her incarceration.

Side by Side by Sondheim April 26, 2012

April 26-28, 2012 7:30 pm
Edina Performing Arts Center

The sophistication, wit, insight, heart and genius of Broadway's most innovative and influential artist is at the center of this tribute to composer-lyricist Stephen Sondheim.

This dazzling array of some of Sondheim’s best-known songs features numbers from landmark shows that revolutionized the musical theatre with their masterful craft and astounding creativity  Company, Follies, A Little Night Music, A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum, Anyone Can Whistle, and Pacific Overtures, not to mention the classics written with musical theatre giants Leanard Bernstein, Julie Styne, and Richard Rodgers, West Side Story, Gypsy, and Do I Hear A Waltz?

Minimal sets and costumes, a small cast and two pianos allow the brilliant songs to shine. The proceedings are run by a charming, pithy narrator whose virtually non-existent musical requirements are ideal for a non-singing, local celebrity with limited rehearsal time.
