In Shakespeare’s Land of the Dead, Minneapolis playwright John Heimbuch provides comic relief with his “true and accurate account” of a fictional zombie plague in London, circa1599. It’s William Shakespeare meets zombies in the Globe Theater.
After the Globe’s inaugural performance of Henry V, the company’s costumer is bitten by a plague-ridden madman and life in the playhouse takes a turn for the worse. As the affliction spreads destruction throughout London, the Globe is placed in quarantine and the survivors within must fight for their lives. Can they escape? Is there a cure? Shakespeare’s Land of the Dead is both a comedic homage to zombie films and a carefully researched drama about Shakespeare and his authorship.
This one-act play will also be performed at the Minnesota State High School Sub-section theater competition at Eden Prairie High School on Thursday, January 28, 2010.
