About A Piece of My Heart: A Piece of My Heart takes place in the memories of Vietnam veterans. Told in flashback, the play moves through a 20-year period, from the time they are sent to Vietnam until they are reunited for the dedication ceremony at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall. The Wall, dedicated in November 1982, recognizes the service and sacrifice of all who served in Vietnam. It is not a war memorial, but a memorial to those who served in the war, both living and dead.

Act I memories include the decision to go, the induction process, personal experiences in Vietnam, and concludes with the day each person came home.

Act II memories include landing in the airport, personal experiences of the characters upon return, and concludes at the dedication of the Wall.
